In today’s episode, I interviewed Dr. Freeman. Dr. Freeman, a Doctor of Osteopathy specializing in Family Medicine, highlighted many wonderful insights in today’s podcast segment. Some topics we discussed included the history of the DO, the role of preventative care in family medicine, and so much more.

Meet Doctor of Osteopathy, Dr. Freeman Emergency Medicine Memoirs

Dr. Freeman first explains what a DO is and how it came to be. She explains that there is either an MD, a medical doctor, or a DO, a doctor of osteopathy, in the United States medical field. DOs take more holistic approaches to their treatments, working much closer with patients using their hands and maneuvering their tissues to improve health and well-being. She then goes on to talk about the history of the DO. In the 1800s, a doctor was interested in why Asian immigrants had much better health than Irish-American immigrants. After much research and investigation, he discovered that they had much better hygiene concepts. However, he also noticed that they carried a bone setter tool that would treat injured individuals by working on their tissues and, essentially, “resetting the bones.” So, the idea of the DO arose. The DO cultivates Eastern and Western medicine into a fusion of modern holistic medicine.

Additionally, she explains that preventative care plays a major part in family medicine in emergency medicine. In short, she explained that preventative care, in a way, is a measure of stopping emergneyc medical care from happening. Through her practice as a family medicine practitioner, she works on ensuring that she is already placing preventative care methods on her patients to ensure they don’t have to go through emergneyc medical care. Essentially, family medicine is the preventative care.

While many other insightful and delightful conversations were discussed today, these two topics of conversation were amazing to have with Dr. Freeman. She illuminated osteopathic medicine’s intricate history and profound significance, underscoring its holistic approach and fusion of Eastern and Western healing traditions. Through her expertise, she emphasized the pivotal role of preventative care in family medicine, illustrating how it serves as a cornerstone for averting medical emergencies and fostering overall well-being. Dr. Freeman’s insights serve as a testament to the invaluable contributions of osteopathic physicians in promoting holistic health and preventive medicine.
